Why are nuts and bolts always floor-coloured?

No matter where I'm working on a bike, in the shed, on the patio, at work, why is it always so difficult to find those little bits that always drop on the floor. The floor can be all sorts of colours but the little buggers are like chameleons and adapt to their surroundings.

Its one of the unknown forces of nature that causes small objects dropped to change colour and also role underneath somthing, out of reach of human hands.

There was a funny thing that happened all the time when playing with legos, if I really wanted a piece, no way I would find it. If ignored and searched for other, it would show up in a second. With bolts I use a cat, they will find it fast.

I use my girlfriend, she's a lot younger than me so her eyes still work properly. Failing her attendance an LED torch lying on the floor helps.

And whatever you do don't take shifters apart in a room with sanded floorboards.

ahahaha, mine is younger too and has much better looking eyes than me, but it ends there. So cats do the work, specialy finding "that" lighter that has been missing.

use that terracota or light grey garage floor paint ..or black...I find stuff real easy

This is indeed a mysterious phenomenon.

Drop a nut on my shed floor and look as hard as I like it won't be found.

Come back the the shed the next day and I'll find it in seconds, but only if I've spent money on a replacement already.

Fixings I drop I always find them, I see where they bounce and find them, my problem is mislaying tools, I put them down to do something then forget where I have put them even when I am sitting on the floor as I do fixings stuff.

But thinking of the floor, I remember one employer scolding me for sitting on the floor fixing something and he did not approve, saying something about a work bench and expense, but I like to repair sitting cross legged on the floor.
