Do we need 10 speed on a mountain? BITD I had 7 then 8 now 9 But it has made difference to me and how i cycle. Is this just the makers trying new ways to get to buy new kit :?

I quite like the idea of having 10 speed, apart from the wear issues, chain thickness etc, it will allow a wider spread of gears without such big jumps between ratios, I have run road blocks for a few years and find I can spin and find the right gear easier.. might be down to use to using a 12-28 ratio for so many years...

Well thats my opinion anyway...  :)

Personally I have not seen any 10spd MTB gear set ups. The '08 Shimano range certainly doesn't do them, even at XTR level.

I run both a 8 & 9spd set up on my 2 MTB's, I prefer the 9spd set up as there is less of a 'jump' between the gear ratio's.

Depends where you're riding I think.

My part of the world has fairly flat, gravelled paths pretty much everywhere, and any long off road ride is bound to take in some tarmac too, so it's great with a few close ratios at the top end, like on my cross bike.

When it does get gnarly, steep and technical though, it's good to have smaller steps between the ratios at the bottom end too.

I seriously considered running a 12-27 10 speed cassette with thumbies and a DA long-cage mech on my Pace, but liked the new XT rapidfires and Shadow rear mech so much I decided against.

10 speed chains seem to run fine on cyclocross bikes so can't see them being problematic on XC MTBs.

I just came in from two off road rides on 10spd this weekend and I have to say I think I'd prefer 9spd on my cross bike. One crosser has it (9spd) and it just feels less confused and over complex.

Today I found myself wondering where in the block I was as i came to hill sprints. Personally I don't need the extr gradual spread of ratios, and it'll definately last less well against the winter muck, I could see that unfolding out there today. But it's the way forward with roqad set ups so I moved with the times on the initial build. And it did mean a nice compact chainset 34/50 which is perfect for the cross bike as I have/ use it.

9spd seems perfectly adaquate, I'd hope they realise that and stay there for mtbs.

:D

I've never really understood the need for so many gears on a bike 18, 21, 24, 27, why?

I reckon and this is just my opinion 14 gears is ample 2 front rings and 7 rears with a good spread will suffice most if not all riders. I cant remember the last time i used the granny ring.

i have just put an old 7 speed cassette on an old deore hub with an even older m231 rim on my 99 gt and i love it! i recon between 21 and 24 is all you need.

I use 7, 8, and 9. The most trouble is with the 9. And I rarely shift into smallest ring, so I tune to the big ring side.

But I sure like the idea of single in front, and 10 on rear. :D

My current 10spd bike had that set up before i took it over and it worked well.

46t on the front and 12-27 on the back.
