White industries crank BB length?

unofficial

Dirt Disciple
I am planning on getting some oldschool white industries cranks (the American ones and not the Japanese sugino ones) and was wondering if anyone knew what bb spindle length is needed?

Re:

Pretty sure they need 113mm. I have a single ring setup that’s using a 107mm but that wouldn’t work for a triple.

Re:

Just curious to know the difference between the American and Japanese ones? I recently bought a retro ride, that I think was built from parts around 1991-1993, and has a mint White Industries crank on it and wondered which one and benefits of each?

Re:

Look at the back of the crank arm and see what it says.

C tote (Sugino made are cold forged and technically a better crank, heavier though, only came in compact)

M type CNC machined, nicer cranks, more kudos, came in 110/Compact and roadie sizes.

Needed longer axles iirc, not sure if 118ish or 125ish.
It'll be on the forum.

Sugino are well Sugino super low profile, so probably (107)110/113 length.

Re:

Cheers for that, mine say specially made in Japan for White Industries and look cold forged rather than CNC'd, also have the logo just printed on, rather than others i've seen engraved in, think that answers it!

Re:

Thanks for the replies! I am going for some classic American made stuff for an old ritchey and have always liked white industries non flashy utilitarian design just like ritchey bikes. So I guess I will give 118 a shot and hope for the best!

Have a search around though see what info crops up.
Of course I hope you are fitting and White Industries Ti bottom bracket to that, Phantom preferably.

I've had a look around and found no definitive answer, there is a rb post here with the same question but there was just some vague discussions about chainlines and the conclusion was just to try some different bbs. I would rather not sink money into some nice bb just find out if it will work or not but I will continue searching.

Re:

I just checked my White Industries floating axle B.B. that came fitted on a bike with the M type cranks and it’s 112mm. The same cranks are now running a single ring on a 107mm Royce B.B.

Cheers! The evidence is stacking up for 112/ 113 then...
