Which clipless pedals for the road if not Shimano?

I've used Shimano MTB SPD's since the first batch came over in the early 90s and to me they are probably my favourite cycling 'invention' of all time. I dabble in road bikes and have stuck to MTB type clipless (A520s) on there.

However, having just got some nice new roadie shoes and kind of liking the idea of trying something different I want to try dedicated road pedals.

Planned to go for 105 5800 Carbons' as they tick all the boxes - this latest road bike is a bit of a w-weenie build - but how about Look/Speedplay/Time? Budget £100 or so max.

Key factors are light weight/compact style/ease of use/no finicticky maintanance and preferably no real big leap on feel or click in method compared to SPD's. A bit of carbon would be nice too...

Opinions/suggestions/feedback welcome! :)

Re:

If I had my time over, I'd quite literally go with Time. Unfortunately I bought my 1st two pairs of Looks just as Time ones became available at sensible prices. Some nice Time Equippe Magnesiums would do nicely sir!

I can highly recommend the current Shimano SPD-SL pedals.

I’ve ridden Look PP296 and the Campagnolo Record pedals (white model not dissimilar to the Look pedals) but after using the modern Shimano 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace pedals I really wouldn’t go back. Low stack height, wide platforms and an excellent cleat with softer compound pads on the cleat surface for extra grip when walking.

I could never get the cleat rotated enough to be comfortable with Look or Shimano SPD-SL so went for speedplay.
(the zero models offer 15 degrees of movement) and are double sided, just like your mtb SPDs ... BUT ...

they are maintenance hungry little blighters as the cleats need lubing and the pedals should after every wet ride ... :)

pair of time atac going spare here but i havent dared remove the from the crank yet as its via long hex key from the rear of the pedal bit cross eyed to which way they turn
im assuming drive side from the rear is clockwise an the other anti-clockwise but dont want to try till i know its safe to do so

why not shimano ? the 7410 DA and equivalent 600 road pedal used the same small metal cleat as your MTB pedals but were only available for a few years in the 90s , the only problem now is modern shoes are nearly all looks "3 bolt" design

Got two or three sets of them, and another 3 or 4 sets of assorted times lying around in various states of repair........... been on time since LeMond won his 89(?) tour on them.

time dramatically downsized the chunk of brass of the TBT cleats when they released the impact and the RXS models , now the latest expresso models have a full plastic cleat !

Today was the first time I had ever used clip less pedals, so I'm something of a novice..

However, I have Time Expresso 8's and thought they did the job perfectly!

Re:

I'm another Speedplay user, as is my son (he convinced me), my daughter and her partner (both spd users on mtb's).

Light and simple, and almost always available in good used condition on eBay.
