Anyone know of any wheel building courses? I live near Heathrow and work in London so would need a course fairly nearby. Cheers!

youtube... seriously... have a search... it's not that hard and there are heaps of good websites etc which show you all you will need to know.

I honestly think wheelbuilding in the modern age is not the "art" the oldsters make out it once was/is - modern rims make it easy.

I've done it before - Just wanted to refresh old skills really. Will check out Youtube tonight. Cheers.

Agreed. There are loads of websites and internet material to get you well underway.
After trueing my wheels using the bike as a trueing stand for about 15 years I bought a proper stand and a dishing stick last year and taught myself how to lace up the spokes and build wheels from scratch.

With a trueing stand and a bit of patience you can build up a great set of wheels. It's a good idea to get hold of a old/cheap wheel to start with and practice taking it apart and rebuilding it.
Getting an even tension is the only part that requires any 'skill' or finesse, but even that isn't too tricky.
I actually find it very relaxing building wheels, in the lounge with a cup of tea and the TV on.

I found the guide on gil-m's website very useful:

You've got Sheldons guide too, which I read a few times but didn't necessarily follow to the T. Oh and having a complete wheel as a guide is handy.

Do not underestimate the importance of this piece of advice!

I've got a pair of wheels I built where the valve hole is difficult to get to because of the lacing
