A bit embaressing, but what is the difference between 8 and 9 speed chainrings?
I should know this :D

Thanks,
Martin

Shimano may have changed their designs when they brought out Mega9, but that's just Shimano for you, doesn't mean that they aren't interchangeable. Middleburn rings are simply described as 8/9 speed, so there is no difference.

there were plenty of 8 speed compact chainsets.

I didn't say there weren't...

...however, I was as guilty as some in not reading the OP entirely correctly

My reply would have been better suited to 'chainSETS' as opposed to 'chainRINGS' because, as such, so long as the BCD is the same there is NO difference

The INSIDE part of the chain is the same for 7/8/9. It's only the outside width of the chain that's different (a combination of smoother rivets and thinner side plates). So all rings are interchangeable.

There are a minority of old 7 speed chainsets which have the rings so far apart that a 9 speed chain can drop down the gap.
