What xtr mechs do 7 speed?? Think i have messed up

Isn't the cut off point for the narrower chains at 9 speed rather than 8? Hence the little "mega-9 compatible" stickers on all Shimano 9 speed gear.

Of course feel free to pull me up if I am talking crap also folks :) .

If 8 is narrower than 7, why can you get 6/7/8 speed chains?

And . . . I just got an 8-speed for the Voodoo and it looks identical to the 7-speed that's on there . . .

Not disputing anything, just want to know. . . 8)

I'll say again what I've said many times:

ANY slant parallelogram Shimano rear mech will do 6/7/8/9 when using the relevant shifters and chain.

9 spd chains work with 7/8 spd systems

7/8 spd chains are usually the same width

9spd chainsets work perfectly well in 7/8 spd systems

You have not messed up.

Right, a 7speed chain, is wider than a 8-9 as the casette rings are thicker, and it'd make the hubs wider, which the makers can't do, as most bikes are a 130-135mm rear dropout width (i think..) and if the 8-10 speed casettes we're all the thickness of the 7, then they would be wider, thus unable too fit the frame unless it's bent out, which ruins the frame, and viods all new frames warranties. and as top level now is carbon, it's like bending reallly thin plastic  alternately.. i could be talking crap. but someone will say soon

You sir, are talking crap.

9 spd cassettes are as wide as 8 spd which are wider than 7 spd. 8spd chains are sold as 7 or 8 spd.

cog spacing on 7 and 8 spd are approximately the same (5mm/ 4.8mm).

You buffoon.

To put some similar experience on this my wifes trek is using an XTR-m900 mech with an pair of 7 S STX-RC shifters, STX-SE 7 speed hubs and a 7 speed chain and works perfectly, before that it was on my CB (changed to XT for correctness) with XT thumbies, XT 7 speed cassette and chain and also worked perfectly.

As LGF said I don't think your particular setup will give any problems and should take minutes to set up.

Carl.

8) 8) 8) 8)

glad not messed up, just need to get a 8 speed chain now then

Or a 7..

I bought a 'narrow' 8-speed chain and, if there is a difference to the 7 that's already on there, it's no visible to me so must be a gnats c**k width..
