What width of tyre looks chunky?

I'm doing up a 1994 Trek 850 at the moment and would like some chunky looking tyres on the 26" wheels. What kind of width would be good? I think the originals were 26 x 1.9 but the tubes don't hold air so i don't even know what they look like!

Thanks!

2.1 2.2, depending on frame clearance. Some makes look fatter than others when on the bike though.

Despite modern tyres being much wider, it's the added height that marks them out imo. I can sot newer tyres a mile away. Anything 2.2" or bigger constitutes a large tyre imo.

Re:

2.35" is manly chunky looking!! as I found out today

Possibly too wide for some retro frames though.

As above, 2.1" is the standard "full fat" Retro tyre width.
