What type BB do I need for this - New problem!

HOWEVER, can anybody tell me what type of BB replacement I should be looking for to fit the remaining shell??

It depends.
If you want to go original you will have to date the bike to determine whether it should be cottered crank or square taper, I think the changeover was early to mid 70's. Googling 'Sun Snipe' images, most appear to be cottered crank, with a single chainring. If you do want to keep it original you will need to find a BB that is 26tpi, not easy in my experience. I resorted to buying the cheapest OLD Raleigh bike I could find and cannibalising it.

Your other option is a modern threadless BB which is available in square taper. Just google 'threadless bottom bracket' - brings them up for £12 - £20.

Re: What type BB do I need for this?

Crikey, I thought this might be a simple issue . . . you know, remove shell, buy new BB, fit and go riding. But the world of vintage cottered cranks is new and strange. This Sheldon Brown article:

is an eye-opener, but I'm still not sure whether I can find some parts which will fit this shell or instead, how easy it will be to strip out and find something easier and available to fit in place?

Re:

I just stumbled across Cycles of Yesteryear. They appear to sell the BB parts you need - new 'pattern' spare parts. Sadly they appear to be sold out of the Raleigh 26 tpi cups at the moment, but might be worth contacting them to see if they will get more in.

Never used them, so don't know their reputation as an online seller.

Thanks Bruce, will have a look-see. Might have found what I need on eBay though, just tracking an auction.

Re: What type BB do I need for this - Got it!

Thanks for the help guys, got hold of the appropriate axle, outers and bearings which will save me removing previous shell. Not used this type of BB before, but it's old-days-simple, and all seems to fit okay. Had a little trouble getting a grip on the raleigh-type shell to screw it in, but everything seems to work okay. Now to delve into the world of cottered cranks.

Now I can't set the chain-ring straight! Bloody hell.
Finally found the right bottom bracket and chain ring to fit - bearings in the cottered crank axle all sit nicely, everything is the right length and fits lovely.
But the chain-ring, when fitted seems to spin at a slight angle to the frame and it would make the chain weave left and right if I left it. Looks fine when looking at it, only when it spins I realise it's going left and right.
So, is there a trick for setting the chain ring on the cottered cranks without it getting skewed? Do the cotter pins being tightened make a difference to the angle of the chainring?

Re:

Sounds like you are having all the same trouble I did. Check that your chainring is not bent.

I had this with a single chainring that turned out to be bent, after I had first fitted another chainset to eliminate the possibility of a bent bottom bracket. I spent a bit of time with a rubber hammer to straighten the chainring. I put a steel rule across it to find which way it needed to bend, then I found the most extreme point and gave it a sharp whack with the hammer, just hard enough to bend it a little. I repeated this all round the ring until I was happy it was true enough. You have to be careful not to hit the frame if you are trying to bend it out over (do it underneath the BB out of the way.)
