what is the attraction of single speed?

I didn't either. Completely mystified me.

Then I tried it.

No looking back. So simple. No gear hassle. Mud? Pah! Gets you fit. Lightens up the bike.

Singlespeed is a state of mind as much as a state of bike. I went for a ride last night SS and because on the flat I wasn't belting along I actually noticed the sights and smells I normally wouldn't.

Lovely. :D

Youll know once youve tried it.Bike is so much fun to ride, its like being 5 again with your first bike,no gears to worry about just pedal and away you go,bikes are lighter, and so much more quiet, builds your fitness levels up aswell.

Go on,build one and find out

?

still dont get it - a "mountain" bike is supposed to do just that - be able to go up mountains thats why some genius invented the gearing system!

beats me why anyone would want to take that facility away!

just my opinion by the way!

if you want to take in the sights just ride slower and in the correct gear

Youll still get noise lol,its hard to explain to someone who hasnt tried it but it will all become clear when you do

You won't believe what you can climb and how smooth you become.
Limitations of course, that's why I have a road bike and geared MTB as well. Leg power!!

It is very strange and I must admit to not understanding quite what the attraction is but its definately there :?

I've got a 16" Kona Hahanna single speed which is hand painted army olive green which my wife has written " Crisis " on the toptube in silver pen  as she reckons its my mid-life crisis bike because whenever I go out on it I spend most of the time riding like a kid again

I've even had a mess about on the local half pipe on it

Still not convinced. I have a fixed road bike which gets used every now and then. I would say ten miles is about the same as twenty with gears, but.....
Would you buy a Landrover and try to drive it everywhere in third gear?
