...would the RB masses recommend for general usage, no specific activities (well apart from keeping me warm on the way to the pub!)

Needs to be:

Windproof
Full zip
Casual styling (no bright leary colours!)
Not that expensive, ~£50 or so

So what's good for what I want?

please for the love of god dont buy anything north face for actual technical clothing.
 Never bought anything technical from North Face, only one T shirt!

Most of my tech stuff is either Endura, Howies or Berghaus.

So I popped into my local outdoor shop & picked up a Berghaus Spectrum for £35, toasty warm so far, not that windproof, but a great deal I reckon.

Thanks for your advice

Which gear is it you are using?

I have used a variety of the higher end stuff over the last few years and found nothing wanting.

Just curious.

oh don't listen to a bitter old rep like me, especially after a few jars.

the new north face stuff just seemed to have poor quality issues at the budget end, and the op asked for under £50 for wind proof, and as far as i'm aware nf do not make their own spec wind proof fleece.

as for the gear i use....mountain equipment, arcteryx, patagonia, rab, was lucky enough to score kit for next to nothing off all of em.

for budget stuff though i actually really rate the mountain warehouse own brand. decent materials, and actually very nice cuts. cuts seem to be the first thing that suffers with budget stuff, but makes all the difference.
