what disc hubs do you recommend?

not if you use the 1 piece cassette carrier, ie upper end shimano, sram etc. lower end deore etc use seperate cogs which can eat in the cassette body as you mention.

Fair enough. At least one review on Chain Reaction specifically mentioned that problem occurring with an XT cassette, but CRC's customers seem able to break almost anything

Another question; does anyone make (lightweight) coloured rims? To me, bling rims + discs is an obvious combination, since the anodising won't get worn by rim brakes.

Alas the kids seem to like silver or black only :( , unless somebody knows different?

I know on the ANT bikes they sometimes powdercoat the rims in the same colour as the bike, WAY COOL 8)

I use XTR hubs and disc brakes on my bike and I like the separate bearings and races which can be swapped out when worn-thus giving me 4 years of 3000 + miles a year already without wearing out. Pricy but bulletproof and will last indefinitely if properly maintained! Also, they are 28 hole tubeless wheels and work well with a 170 pound rider, no need for more spokes unless you are really heavy.

Quite right. Last if maintained. Personally, I can't be arsed and would rather wait till bearings dead and replace. Do that with Shimano and its new hub time. :(
