What am i doing wrong... saddle woes

Evening all,

I have a hard seat! In my youth i really do not remember having a hard seat, perhaps now i feel it more. When i am out on the bike i am fine but i suspect that the arse discomfort is over-ridden by the lung discomfort. (<< not a joke)

I have my bike on my turbo due to the prevailing weather conditions - cold, wet, icy - generally not good (my excuse). But if i want to try to use the turbo, i am worried about the state my arse will end up in.

Any suggestions for a softer saddle? Dare i ask, will my arse harden up? Am i being a 'wuss' (my daughter's word)?

Richard

Soft or hard is pretty much an irrelevance, shape and position is what you need to focus on.
The shape if the saddle needs to fit your arse, your position on the bike needs to correct (minimise) the loads on the soft bits (or eliminate them altogether)

What you are saying, if i read between the lines and remember from my youth, is that i should grin and bear it! The position and shape are fine unlike my rear.

Thanks,

richard

p.s. i am listening to The Rolling Stones = Just My Imagination... running away from me --- somewhat appropriate LOL

bed time,

Richard

Maybe you could be more specific about where it hurts. for instance if it is your tail bone then it may be that you just need mor time in the saddle. If you are getting sores, rubbing then you need chamois butter of the like. Also Are you riding with the proper shorts with a new chamois? An old worn out bib can do more harm than good particularly from worn seams.

Or you could just be old?

Kidding kidding.... anyway I am older than you, Richard.

No. Not in the slightest. Read what I've actually written and not what you think I've written.

Soft saddles are not automatically comfy saddles, saddles/bikes that fit are comfy.

If your saddle has become uncomfortable, something has changed. If it's always been uncomfortable, you either have the wrong saddle, or the wrong fit.

To be fair to your saddle even my fav saddles for riding on are damn uncomfortable when sat on a turbo trainer :? Weird comment I know but that's what I have found. Can ride 6 hours on same bike without so much as a peep from the bum dept .... 20 mins on the trainer is a different story

In my experience it's all about installation and position. I refurbed a touring bike last year and bought a Charge Spoon saddle and after a couple of rides it was killing me, I was in agony. A friend gave me a Specialized saddle off his road bike, which looked like a razor blade and was hard as nails and yet immediately it was like an old armchair. A month later I went on a 300+ mile tour of Normandy with no problems whatsoever. I fitted the Charge saddle to my Kona Hoss MTB, the bike I use most days and despite my fears, it hasn't given me any problems. I can only assume that initially, it was just not the correct saddle for a road bike, or at least the angle I was sitting on it, but as my Kona had a completely different sitting position, it worked a treat.

Saddle shape is a big one as mattr said, you also need to make sure the saddle is in the right position and that you sit on your sit bones, Tuberosity of the ischium if you wish and not on your "willy pipe" or tail bone either.

I tried a turbo trainer once and nearly fell off, as I was looking at the video on the screen in front which was playing a descent of some alpine pass somewhere. I wanted to pass the car in front and tried to ride round it, the guy in the shop nearly wet himself as I flapped about. Apparently I was supposed to ride through the car ????? WTF.
