Welding a cracked rim?

I was putting my new tyres on today and noticed my Mavic XC 517 is cracked from the spokes down.

I have swapped on to a MavicD521 that I had in the shed for the moment, but it is a bit more meatier and heavier.

What are peoples opinions on getting the XC517 welded up?

I was thinking of keeping it as a spare?

Or how much does it cost for someone to build a wheel nowadays - it has been so long since I had one done?

I know the XC517 cost me £90 back in the day - built and with deore hub.

no can do, mavic 517 rims are anodised, (silver or black) so that would have to be removed, and the eylet would have to be removed before welding could take place. factor in the loss of strength welding would introduce, and the fact that rims are only peanuts now the jod would no doubt cost more than a new one.. ....

Unless you can get it welded for free, it's better money spent on a new rim. Will probably rebreak next to the crack anyway.

517s: Lots of them do that, eventually.
Often, just before the side-wall wears through.

As above:
It can't be economically repaired. Even if it could, once 1 eyelet cracks, the adjoining ones might follow soon afterwards.

Ok thanks for the advice. I'll strip it down to save my hub then bin it.

A shame as I wouldn't consider it had too much use either.
