my thoughts exactly.
not sure what the limits are (i.e. could you make decent load bearing components??)
saw something like this on the gadget show the other nigth (i normally stay well away from the TV)
had something like this at Uni back in 2003....
 
A friend is making one at work, all the plans and controller code are freely available. Not sure how much the materials are costing him (I think the boss is unknowingly paying), but I'll try and find out.

Some very cool stuff made with it, but I think hardened and ground bearing races are out!
 
a synthetic rifle stock maker i know was looking at one of these (or a similar machine) so they could effectively cnc a replica stock for customers to try for size etc. before they confirmed the order.

the one he was looking at used a hard wax type media that could be recycled back into a new blank so there was very little wastage.



the 'proper' versions are awesome, not too sure how good these would be in comparison.
