Mavic definately did a similar thing at the time, I saw some NOS rims available on the web recently but I think the lack of tyres may be a problem today!
I'm pretty sure Campag did a similar thing at the time too. I suppose they failed due to the perceived lack of repairablity and the fact that they cost a fortune at the time and the tyres didn't come in pretty colours (fairly important in the early nineties!
I also wonder whether the lack of sideways rigidity didn't help, can't imagine that a glue on, large volume tyre would really handle the effects of a few sharp corners off road in the same way as a modern wire on tubless would. I know that road tubs are nice and secure but then they are tiny in volume and have a very low profile so I imagine the sideways forces are much lower on them
