I’m having some indexing problems with my Campag 9-speed Veloce system, rather weird ones!
I’ve bought a new set of levers and a cassette (13-26) and also new cables. I have a Veloce front and rear mech (short cage) but these came with the bike, although they don’t seem to be worn. However, just to be safe, I’ve ordered some new Campag 9-speed jockey wheels.
Here’s the weird part of the shifting – it’s perfect climbing up the cassette but when dropping down, it seems to overshift between the 16 and 15 and ditto between the 15 and 14, almost wanting to drop into the 13! This is almost the exact opposite of what would happen if the inner wire were snagging, so in a strange way, it’s shifting too well!
I’m certain that it’s not cable related and when tweaked up to eliminate the overshifting, of course, the upshifting to 21, 23 and 26 is effected with the chain wanting to climb too far, again the opposite of what one would expect.
Logic says that as the rear mech is the only non-new item, it must be this, but TBH, it shows no signs of wear.
Any ideas before I order a new rear mech? The only other thing I can try is to split the cassette and make sure that the spacers are correct, although with Campag, you’d expect any such mistake to be almost impossible.
