My son like me has been watching the Tour and fancies a roadbike. Now he doesn't always get what he wants but any cycling related urges are to be encouraged :D . He's nine and currently rides a 14.5" framed 26" wheeled mountain bike that I lovingly crafted for him. Are there any makers who supply roadbikes in very small sizes?

Islabikes do a couple. But secondhand is the best way, IMO. Peugeot did a lot of kids road bikes in the 80s, some of them were excellent.

Not many road bike manufacturers make small frames.

Trek make small roadbikes -42 cm frames with 650c wheels which is what I have. Giant did make a similar size but discontinued it a couple of years ago. Second hand though may be avalable

Isla bikes make small frames as another poster said but I think the road spec is Sora and you may want to upgrade this.

XADC in China make custom frames in Ti - mine cost around £500 if you want to push the boat out a bit!

decathlon did a budget 24" wheel racer, which was quite good VFM. Now discontinued, but appear second hand now and then. Not as cheap as you might think cos of demand.

toysRus have one in a 26" wheel for £99, was £150, so I think theyre being phased out. Steel frame, alloy wheels, 14 speed down tube gears and mediocre alloy kit. Ok for getting him on the road, but probably not good enough for juvenile racing.

small bike

Hi grannygrinder
There was a Giant TCR juniors bike on ebay when I looked on Sat, might still be there. Its in the Telecom colours and was going, at that time quite cheap. They came well specced and built to the same high standard as an adults TCR.

why not make one out of a small mtb frame using 26" wheels with skinny tires and drops

46t 36t front with whatever on the back, bright paint job, funky tap and Bob's your Uncle - a smaller roadie.
