a longshot, but anyone have a hard spring for a USE SUB fork, the one i have is far too soft!

Re: ** USE SUB fork hard spring **

good luck with that, ive been after one for ages too. almost bought another fork just for the spring.

what spring have you got? i have medium, i dread to think what soft would be like. as it is i cant really use it in anger, only for pose value

Re: ** USE SUB fork hard spring **

Personally, given the rarity of the USE S.U.B. 'Fork' and the lack of spare parts, I'd be looking at having a spring made to order.

USE should still be able to lay their hands on spring rate and dimensions, or if not, you could measure your existing spring and add a degree of stiffness that you feel would be appropriate. Its a coil spring, so its action is essentially linear. More travel requires proportionately more force, so its possible to make an educated guess at the increase in spring rate you require using nothing more than a ruler and some bathroom scales.

Once you have an idea of measurements, then many spring manufacturers will do one offs. Most springs are CNC manufactured now, which has brought the costs down hugely since all the operator has to do is key in some dimensions, load in some wire, and hit a button.

Someone like Airedale Springs in Yorkshire, Ashfield Springs in Nottingham, or associated spring in Evesham will be able to help, although there are dozens of uk manufacturers to choose from, which again, keeps prices very keen. Yes, shock and horror, we still make stuff in the uk!

You may also find that USE used an existing spring design for the S.U.B. it's not uncommon given the millions of designs out there that you'll find one that fits your application "off the peg".

Re: ** USE SUB fork hard spring **

Turns out the solution was simple!
Thanks to Royboy2cv on here.....
He messaged me with a phone number for USE, and I got to speak with the guy that did all the R&D for the SUB fork, it's his baby, and although no spares are listed anymore, some are still available! I have a hard spring, service kit, bottom seal, main internal fork bush coming, along with a bottom stanchion/leg ! Should totally refresh the fork and it will be good for years to come!
He sent also sent me PDF copies if all relevant servicing info, suggested pressures for rider weight etc. I will try and make them available for all on here.
Will update with some pics of strip-down and rebuild once the spares are here :D

And Catf, you're right! The soft spring is ridiculous, just pushing down in the bars standing beside the bike bottoms the travel!! I reckon the previous owner must have been about 8 stone in weight, I'm 15, so you can imagine!!

Hopefully the hard spring will give it some usability, can't wait to try it out!

Cheers!
:D

Oh, that Whyte went to a good home...

It's currently in bits sharing a workshop with a collection of suspension madness that includes another PRST-4, a Cannondale Lefty, Pace RC40's and a Look Fournales linkage fork...

Re: ** USE SUB fork hard spring **

Thats another one i would like to get my hands on , the Look Fournales linkage fork i mean, but the prices or going through the roof ,
do what the rest of us are doing get rid of the lefty and put a USE SUB on it , ok no lock out , but the anti-drive on braking is great .

i nearly went for a look!
owwwwk was/is selling one, but it's a large and i would have needed a medium, ended up going down the mono-leg route instead!
indeed i could not be happier knowing that grant has the PRST4, i'm sure it will emerge looking incredible soon!
the quirkiness of the SUB makes up for the lack of any preston in my life...... almost!

I use Lizard skin right hand fork boots (upside down) on both of my Subs, they fit straight on without alteration.
