pretty sure these only came in that campagne gold colour so i think they had a bad respray at some point

No. They did come in black but in very limited numbers towards the end of the production run. One of the guys at the shop I used to work at got a set.

Edit: Just read that he's talking about paint chips. The black ones were anodised and not painted. These were probably silver originally.
