Uninidentified Kona frame & forks, eBay UK

looks just what i was after, anyone able to offer advice on how i confirm it as a cindercone or lava dome, not really looking for anything lower down the order, so if i contact him whats the easiest measuremnt or info to use to confirm its identity.

is it an size 18
Anthony, now would be a good time to chime in

I was looking at this earlier and by looking at the Kona cats on retrokona it could be a 1993 or 1994 CC or LD frame (both were the same), as it has no stop for V's, toptube cable routing, carrier bosses and 1 1/8th headset. I think it would also be classed as a 16. Was thinking about this for the wife to replace the frame she currently has but I don't want another frame I have to get modded for V's so I think the lack of mounts rules it out for me.

drcarlos, it's not a 16".
For a start is 17.5 CT'top of top tube'. and Kona measure to top of seat tube so you need to add some to the 17.5" So it's +~3" for CtC to get CTT, so go for 19"

Anyway, get the chap to measure it properly
He can also give you the start of the serial number to give you he year.

He said it was 'to the top of seat tube', now whether he means the top tube I have no idea, if it is it could well be a 19, if it is to the seat clamp it could be 16, either way it needs a proper measure.
Anyway I would need a 16 and would want to run V's and it would need a cable stop adding so I think I'll pass anyway.

That'll teach me to be reading another advert at the same time as answering.
That will be to the top and that will mean either 17" or 18" Kona frame, I'll leave it to the people who know the headtube to tell you which. but I'd go 17" too fill in the gap

I'm fairly sure it's a size 18 rather than 17, 94-96, no sign of which model. If he can't/won't weigh it, it'll be a lucky dip. As it stands, it seems like fair value as long as it stays at £1.20.

Just for my future reference when did Kona move to V's as obviosuly there would need to be an addtional stop on the top tube.

dont the lava domes and hahannas have different geometry and shorter chainstays or something, would some simple measurements not determine what it is?

1997, but the 1996 high-end frames had Magura guides, and these can be converted to V-stops - I use a couple of rm barrel adjusters, but I expect you can find something posher if you know where to look.

The dog collar canti-guide can be used as a V-stop, but in my experience it doesn't work on sizes 16/17 (and maybe 18 is marginal), because the cable outer is too stiff to work with such a short length and overwhelms the brake tensioner. However if you can get hold of a short run of Nokon cable, it's so flexible that it works perfectly with the collar.
