I am nearly finished my Kona project (1st one) after getting the final part, the rear mech in the post today, so hopefully it will be finished at the weekend and will post pics on here for everyone to see it, I am at the crossroad of deciding what cranks to put on the bike, as the bike have Shimano LX canti brakes, brake levers, gear shifters, hubs, front mech and rear mech, I have 2 set of cranks, a Shimano LX and Middleburns, I want to keep it all the same with LX stuff with the crank but the Middleburns look really lovely aswell.

What do you reckon guys? Shimano LX to go along with the other parts or stick Middleburns on it?

Cheers

if it's all matching put the lx on, save the middleburns for the next higher end retro build! you're bound to do another 1! middleburns are good for orange/roberts/dave yates retro builds with pace forks etc, english theme maybe.

just a thought. :)

LX my man listen to me and johnny...........

3rded...ignore the snobs, there's nowt wrong with LX cranks and if they match the rest of the build..... 8)

All the LX stuff is retro from the '90's years apart from the hubs as the wheels are new, cranks is retro aswell.

i did a similar thing on my c16r it's mostly matching lx, but i saved my middleburns for my earlier clockwork with dx kit on it,

i'm not obsessed with getting the bikes perfect spec for the model year etc i just like to get them in the ball park, like my c16r is a 96 i think so mid 90's ish lx was fine, my clockwork being earlier i thought dx and thumbies were right and i consider that the show bike so thats why it got the middleburns.

sometimes though i put the best bits i have available on a bike then if i get something that would suit those parts better i'd then start rebuilding bikes left right and centre! that way you don't get irritated by the fact that you want to use the better parts that are sat on a shelf.

at the end of the day though it's your bike, do what makes you happy! :D

Cheers for that, well the bike is built for my sister, she doesnt know about it, I am doing it for nothing for her, she got a cheap 2005 Specialized MTB with suspension forks, it's pretty heavy and ugly, if she love the Kona, she can have it and hopefully she let me have her bike and will stick on ebay to get some money back on what I have spend on the Kona, whatever happens, that Kona will stay with either me or sister, I am chuffed with bike and put unique colour on it, so watch this space, next week, pics will be here.

rebuilding left, right and centre.......I know that feeling

Personally along side the M737 XT cranks, I think the Black LX cranks of the same time (M563?) are some of the aestheticly nicest cranks out there.

I run Black LX with middleburn silver rings on my orange...so go for both :)
