Ultimate V Brake

Hi guys,

Looking to buy some V brakes for an ongoing build, I have owned the Paul Motolites which were very good, but fancy a change, has anyone used any of the Avid Ultimate V brakes ? or can you suggest anything better ... ?

Your help in this expensive decision would be appreciated ...

as far as i know, the name "ultimate" is not a misnomer.
avid arch supremes look cooler though

I'm running Ultimate's on my Lloyd. I bought them because the noodle direction can be changed and the Lloyd has the cable on the right of the top-tube meaning that XTR's would need dodgy routing (XTR's are my benchmark and my previous favourite). I was looking at the Pauls but found a set of Ultimates cheap which swung it. I'd still like to try the Pauls.

I've run them with XTR levers and Real levers. The XTR's feel better but the Real's look better. I would like to try the Avid Ultimate levers but they always go for more pennys than I am happy to pay.

The pivots are really far apart on the rear of the Lloyd and I have had to space things out a bit to get them to work - but they work very well when the pads are new, not so well as the pads wear. This is not a fault with the brakes.

Overall... they work great and are a joy to work on.

Avid Arch Supreme's, they look amazing, and work the bestest. Apparently the Marinovate/Mrazek superlight V's are excellent, i have a pair, but no bike to try them on yet, so i cant say.

Original XT V's.
I know people moan about the parallel linkage getting worn, but I've got a set that I've had for ten years and they still work as well as, if not better, than any others I've tried.

Avid Ultimates are called that for a reason. Got them on my Deluxe, dead light, no dodgy linkages, nice sealed bearing design, powerful and piss to set up... Had them with the Ultimate levers which were nice but a bit "busy" looking. My levers had no return spring though (not sure if they're all like that) that meant if your cables got shitty, the brakes would "drag" a bit. Using M950 now and they're still the d's b's :D

i've got some canti arms & really like them. webbys had levers & cantis for quite some time now & his levers have developed a fair amount of play. i'd go for the arms but leave the levers (I use XTR with ultimate & really like them :)

I use (have used) both Ultimate V's, Tri allign V, Arch supremes and Tri allign canti's.
The Arches are the best cable actuated rim brakes I have ever used. Second are the Ultimate V's. The Pauls are close to them also, especially with Paul Love levers 2.5, which are great with all V Brakes.
The Tri allign V's are nice, easy to set up but less powerfull than the other ones. Also you should be ware of using them on a new model fork (the ones with the thick magnesium casted braces because the V's will hit the arch.
So, when you can get them, take Arches (or sell them to me  ) otherwise I would suggest the Ultimates or stick with your Pauls.
