Ultegra Hubs & Hyperglide

Dear Retrobikers...

I have a Shimano 6402 rear hub and a 7 speed HG cassette. The cassette fits onto the free-hub body and the locknut also screws into the end of the body. Trouble is, it appears I need a spacer (which I don't have).

Can anyone advise where I might find such a thing.

The 6402 is nominally an 8-speed hub. To use a 7-speed cassette, you need a spacer like this one:

You could also use any eight or nine speed cassette as long as the smallest sprocket has twelve teeth or more.

On my sons bike had probably before a 8 speed cassete which later on has been replaced by a 7 speed one. With behalve of a spacer. Nevertheless the cassete gives a noice and is not tight on the hub.

OK, Thanks for the info, I will get a spacer and see what works.

Don't really want to convert to 8 spd unless I need to - else its a change in levers and so on.
