This is something i have known for years one time when i was teaching at a college i was performing a demonstration to students and upon doing so found several open networks near by 2 of whom was primary school networks i was amaazed to find that and took it upon myself to go to inform both the schools in question.

The scenario isnt much better these days as most people take a home router out the box and follow the on screen instructions and think because they get online quick that they done well not knowing they could be hacked very easily

Dont you need a wap code or something to enable the router to work on your computer.....mine is security enabled at home and at work :?

no, as standard, they're unsecure, plug and play.. as it we're.. mine at work and home are both WEP secured 8) and so is my phone..

And isnt this all scaremongering with the worse case scenario again :?:

how many hackers are likely to be sitting outside my house anyway....erm....none I say.....

If you take a computer wiz kid/nerd then he could get into anything I will warrant
but most people in my town struggle with getting up to sign on let alone anything else

Can be taken as scarmongering but lets imagine the worst case scenario,

Your living next door to some perv who has enough knowledge to access your network and download illegal porn or attempt to groom anyone under age, when the police investigate it the IP of the main user for the connection would be yours and its you they will want to question

Many reasons why making sure your home WIFI is as secure as possiblle

I appreciate the need for router security but both networks I've been with (and got routers from), BT & Tiscali, came with security encryption and firewall as standard.. ..

I had to remove some security from the BT hub to get access where I wanted to play

Yes scary scenario there ok but the rozzers would get to the bottom of it anyway, mine is secure so not to bothered............

Did you work for the previous government mate as they were fond of putting the wind up people also

In a mo you will have a new programme for sale that will be our salvation

It's how I used to get interweb access as a student, someone in my street had an un-secured router et voila, free broadband :D

No dont do software sorry only scarmongering

A better article on it and the tests that was carried out to identify the number of open networks in the likes of London and other citys.
