I have two bikes with u brakes one has a black xt u brake with the booster thing and is surprisingly sharp. The other is shocking with silver exage mountain with no booster u thing. Would that make such a massive difference?

Can I get just a booster to fit the exage in silver as I don't want black? Or is there another good quality u brake complete with booster I can source?

Also maybe deeper pads/longer block posts would help the setup? Not sure what pads/blocks would fit.

Get someone to haul on the brake while you stand behind and check how much movement there is in the seatstays. It differs between frames - my GT has no flex even without a booster, whereas plenty of others can splay visibly.

Boosters are easy enough to pick up individually, probably worth trying before junking the Exage?

It's the pads you are using the Deore XT Aztec U-brake pads on the XT ubrake they were always really good, the standard shimano blocks on the Exage were no better than average. Stick the XT pads on the Exage U and try them. I have an unboosted exage U on my courier comp and it works well with plenty of power and modulation. It has XT Aztec pads.

Carl.
