does anyone know if i can fit a 2.4 tyre on the back of a gt alloy frame running 26 inch wheels? its just a bike for messing about and i have seen some cheap tyres i fancy. if not a 2.4 what is the max i will get in there?

Measure the distance between the seatstays (& chainstays) and subtract 1/2".

That will give you a rough guide to the max size, but sizing does differ between tyre manufacturers, even though two different tyres (say Tioga & Panaracer) may say they're a 26*2.1 both will be slightly different (In my personal experience)

Tyre Size

I find that they vary like hell from tyre to tyre so the size stamped on the side means nowt. I have had 1.9' fatter than 2.4's. it's that stupid really. only way is to try them inflated or measure the total width bead to bead then calculate out the inflated width. (2.4's would be pretty wide though!)
