Tugnutts....one or two

Question for you singlespeeders...do you use a tugnutt?
My current cough modern build has two as standard...and my soonish to arrive slightly more retro ( Sunchaser) steel frame SS also uses two.
Do you need to run two....was thinking of getting a Surly tugnutt...but surely you only need one on the drive side?
Whatcha think :?:
Cheers, Carl

Depends on a few things.

You can possibly get away with one if your using bolted axles, but quick releases tend to need two.
Also depends what material the dropouts are made of; if the bolt can grip then you may only need one but if the material is very hard than again you will need two.
If your pootling about like a wuss you may only need one, but if your going to try stupid steep hills and ride like a nutter you will probably need two.

Both my bikes with horizontal dropouts needed two - I use drilled out DMR ones.

Thanks fella
I tend to do a bit of both....pootle about like a wuss..and climb steep hills, so I guess 2 is the way forward
Hub is bolted on...standard 10mm...DMR do 10mm tugs I'm sure...are they good?

Can't really say good or bad... they sit there and do the job, I think they limit the amount that the axle can be moved forward in the frame which doesn't bother me on either frame. I'm sure I could file a bit off if I needed more adjustment.

The reason I had to drill them out is to fit the Hope hub axles which are alloy and are larger than the holes in the tug nuts. It was an easy fix and the two pairs I use have been going strong on two bikes for many a year.

Not pretty or pimp but nice functional kit.

Yup...seem to do the job.
The ones I have coming with the frame will no doubt be OK....was looking around for pimp, but apart from Surly which are too fussy for me, there doesn't seem to be much....of course, why should there..its only a tug.
Thanks mate

On my Surly SS which gets rode prety hard up hill (well until the legs wont go no more and i fall off sideways) i use one Tugnut and have had no slippage issues (yet).
