Tools for removing 1991 Karakoram bottom bracket

I don't think you need the crank wrench, the puller can be used for re-fitting the crank bolts, or a standard 14mm, I think, socket.


If you have a cup and cone style bottom bracket, you may need these to get it out:

Personally, if you don't have the tools to remove the cup and cone bottom bracket, I'd be inclined to take it to a shop and get them to remove it, or borrow the tools, then fit a cartridge bottom bracket, like this: https://www.bike24.com/p223775.html?q=un55, they last for ages and are pretty much "fit and forget", just slap plenty of grease on the threads and inside the BB shell so you can remove it easily when it finally does wear out.

You'll need a tool like this to fit the cartridge BB: https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8; ... ;orderby=2 or you can get them with an integrated handle: https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8; ... ;orderby=2

OK. Don't have the socket. Might be a good time to get one. Not against getting some tools to get these things done myself. Recommendation?

That's just great. Thanks. Was actually looking at the UN55 yesterday. I like the aesthetics of the chrome cup and cone that is there now. But it seems the UN55 is at least metal on both sides (not plastic on one side as the UN54). If the cartridge one seals the frame better and holds grime and road salt out, I'm all for it.

I use an adjustable spanner with my crank puller, it comes in handy for cassette removal tools and other stuff as well. I have a rather nice Bahco one that I've had for years: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BAHCO-Adjust ... ctupt=true, but you could get something similar for a lot less: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6-8-10-and-1 ... dzVZeQsxRg, I'd probably steer clear of the 99p stuff though.

Alternatively, Knipex pliars: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WRENCH-CHROM ... ctupt=true, they're really good, but not cheap and it seems they're even more expensive than ever at the moment; I'm sure I paid a fair bit less than that a year or so ago.

If you're going to fit a cartridge BB, you may be best off getting the old BB removed at a shop, rather than buying the tools for one use, or try to borrow some tools. If it's not too tight, you can bodge it using a hammer and an old screwdriver to knock the lock ring around then knock the cup around, but it's far from ideal. You also then have the problem of getting the other side off, which you can do with a wide jawed adjustable spanner, if you have one.
