Took a wheel to be trued and...

... it came back still not true!

OK some more details...

I managed to knock my rear wheel quite a way out of true, and in every direction possible too :?

I took it to my LBS to be repaired- (This LBS has built me a lovely set of wheels in the past and trued a wheel also)

Picked it up this afternoon- didnt pay much attention in the shop but chappie said to me "what happened to this wheel? It was knocked out of true in all directions- I've spent ages on it..."

Paid £20 (last time to have a wheel trued it cost me £12- he charges by the hour I guess)

Got it home ready to fit- had a look and there is still noticeable movement in 2 directions. I have adjusted my V Brakes slightly and it no longer rubs- so its useable...But

Is this acceptable???

£20 for a wheel that is still not quite true. What would you do?

True it myself, but thats not helpful.

Depending on ding, it is not always possible to true up perfectly again without too high tension on usually 1 or more spokes. If its that bad, maybe they should have suggested a new rim.
How much is it out now in mm?

£20 sounds pretty pricy to true up a wheel regardless of how bad (I will build you one for that!) , as you usually get to a reasonable state pretty quick, and if bad, you can tell so don't spendf the time trying to make it perfect - but not having done this for years, I may be out of line with shop prices.

Maybe go back to the shop and enquire why it wasn't better? Then suggest it was pricey for this. Best not go in like bull in China tbh!

Its mainly up and down and about 1mm- as long as the tyre doesnt rub I'm gonna just use it and get on with it.

& If it comes out of true again I'll have the hubs built into some new rims. Its a shame because its the sexy Specialized rims on my S-Works


BTW I've just this minute had a quote for £256 to fix my car that is worth about £256 haha. Puts the £20 into perspective!

if you really did give the wheel a twatting then 1mm up and down isn't that bad but still can be a pain with rim brakes. i think 20 quid is too much though, my attitude was always wheel build price per wheel was 15 quid so a true up should never be more than 10 quid per wheel. also if the wheel was bad when i saw it i would makesure the customer knew that it might not end up perfect, but i'd do my best. it sounds to me though that a re-rim should have been atleast suggested as an option by them.
