Thumb shifters

There was a very good thread in the run up to Christmas about thumbies with 'exploded' photo's showing the actual drilled washer that provides the indexing; and how easy it would be to drill an additional 'detent' to give a genuine 8-speed DX/XT thumbie...

...Note to self: Remember to bookmark interesting/informative threads for future ref

Yes , but they work better using the alternative attachment method to alter the cable throw at the derailleur as the pull is different.

There is this extra motion which can be used for an 8th gear. However, the cog spacing is different, 4.8mm on 8 speed compared to 5.0 for 7. As a result shifting tends to be a bit tetchier unless the derailleur mod is done.

Dérailleur mod, do tell me/us more.

If you clamp the cable on the wrong side of the clamp bolt you reduce the mech throw per click. Similar to the hubbub mod to mix Campagnolo shifters with Shimano. It is done by rotating the clamp piece through 90 degrees.

Not working for SunTour thumbies. They´re dedicated 7speed or 8speed mechanics. You have to manipulate the index ring/washer in order to get more gears.

My blog entry about the innards of SunTour thumbies:

That's good info, though I would have thought you could do something more easily with suntour shifters as they did versions that enables you to run 7 or 8 speed?

Never bothered with any cable clamping changes with Shimano thumbies. Just slung 'em on as they were and 8spds without fuss.
