Threaded steerer conversion

Anyone know a good welder who can extend a 1" threaded steerer by about 3" inches to allow me to convert it to threadless?

Cheers
Will

I may be wrong but i don't think it's a good idea to cut and weld steerer tubes, only option i think would be to get a frame builder to cut the old steerer out and weld in a complete new one.

I tried cutting down and re welding a threaded steerer which was too long for my frame, it worked too but i found out that steel steerers are heat treated, would'nt trust that fork now.

(before anyone gets upset it was'nt a rare or expensive fork  )

The only other approach which occurs to me is to fit a sleeve down the inside, so at least you don't have the bending stress on the weld. You colud probably epoxy the sleeve in, provided the inside of the steerer is cleaned and prepared.

I've never done this, I must emphasise. Carbon fibre tubing should be ideal - available from marine suppliers for racing sailing boats.

An internal sleeve is a good idea to relieve stress on the weld.
A good strong sleeve would either be a section of 22.2mm diameter handlebar or a BMX 22.2mm diameter seat post.
Alternatively a section of 22.2mm quil stem with expander wedge around which a sleeve has been welded or brazed or bolted even can then be fitted to the steerer as the stem would normally be fitted. Stem extenders already exist that could also be used, a 1&1/8th" version to do this specific task already exists available from chainreaction cycles.

Good luck, but reckon a new steerer welded proffesionally into the fork is the best and safest bet !

Their is a company in Germany that will do it. I had mine converted to A-head and made longer. He cut off the threaded section and wealded on a new peace. A real pro. job Just perfect. It cost £60 approx and took two weeks from day of sending to getting back via UPs.
Sorry I can't remember the company name. I had it fixed just before Xmas. Posh26 knows the company too and had a nice job done for him too.

If all else fails you could try a steerer extender:

Dave Yates did mine and it's perfect. He cut and sleeved the old one and extended it by 6 inches. You'd never know to look at it.
