Threaded fork - Ahead stem?

Apart from probably damaging the threads on the fork, is there anything against putting an ahead stem on a threaded fork? Have you done it? And lived to tell the tale?

Re:

Plenty have done it and not died.
Apparently the steerer thickness of the threaded section is less, but then it's a steel steerer.
There are cheap threaded to ahead adapters available, they add a little weight but are a better solution to the problem than clamping a stem onto a threaded fork. Imo.

Thanks jimo746
Yes, I've got one of those adapters on one bike but really I'm on the lookout for a reasonably good quill stem to replace it. My thinking is that clamping an ahead stem to a threaded fork is something of a last resort.
