So I opened with Hello girls and boys, I assumed both sexes would be part of this forum. I did not expect a sarky comment from anyone or admin. As a a noob I was trying to be friendly. Maybe this is not the forum for me.

I just read the post in question and don't think the comment you received was in any way sarky to be honest.
Obviously you said that in jest the part about the "nookie" . But perhaps not the best introduction hey...

Every other response was positive including the first if I'm honest mate.

Your opening message misspelled noobie as nookie - hence the sarky comment. Frankly. the discussion can get a little combative at times (although always friendly & humorous in intent) so if that's not for you, the forum might not be either.

Greencat correct noobie not nookie (predictive txt is a bugger). Thank you for your positive reply. I also did not mean to be harsh. I am 63 years young and struggle with forum technology. I acquired the bike and have struggled with chain alignment. When I got the bike you could not change gear at all. I have watched various vids and have now managed to get gears shifting. Though I am still confused over set up as chain falls off smallest gear if I shift to hard on bar controls. Sorry I do not have the understanding of much of the tech words and have got this far on my own

So here's the thing, MTB trail riding is new to me (3days in fact) I have bearings to replace, cables to be re-newed brake parts and cables, forks are shot. Bike is in pretty bad state, apart from renovation I would love to get out on the trail. Living in France I have some great locations near by. Just want to give it a go so all advice and suggestions will always be welcome. I am an ex ski prep technician and still ski 6 times a year including Powder and Back Country so love any sport that gets my old ticker pumping.
Please be patient with me as some questions maybe stupid. But if you want to 360/720 or Hucklenuck just for the he'll of it. I'm your man. Hope for positive replies and great advice.

Well at least you’ve made a memorable entry to the forum @Retrorider63 !

Your opening paragraph sounded just like one of my old friends so I assumed you did in fact mean nookie as that’s exactly what he would have written!

As for your shifting problem it could be several things but the most simple is likely to be the limit screws which look like they are on the top of your front derailleur in the photo of your bike.

I’ve robbed a photo off the internet, will look something like this. One screw stops the chain falling off the top cog and the other stops it falling off the bottom cog. On most mechs they act on a lever, limiting the amount it can travel, you can sometimes see the back of it which helps working out which one to adjust. If you get stuck keep posting on here and I’m sure we’ll get you sorted.
