Poor bastards

I just got back from the evacuation centre, to my utter surprise there was not as much damage to Cairns as I thought. My house held up with just a lot of trees coming down. Just south of here, it looks like Tully has been all but wiped of the map, I have a friend who lives there with 6 kids, I have no idea where they are.

The evacuation centre was very crowded, about 2,500 people. We lost power about 11 pm, with just minimal emergency lighting on and no air-conditioning. From about midnight to 2 am you could hear the wind right in the middle of a shopping centre. At times the gusts built up to sound like the scream of a jet engine – and every single person was silent.

But the short of it: my son and I are safe, my flatemate who stayed at home with the dogs is safe and the house is still standing. Even the big tree that came down in the backyard missed the shed. It looks like south of Cairns got hit the hardest, and the cyclone is now about 200 km inland and still a Cat 2 (they usually dissipate once the eye goes over land).
