Syncros 3 bolt

There was a set of syncros crank arms on ebay billed as 3 bolt and indeed they had 3 arms/bolt holes, why and what were they?

they were 5 bolt ones missing two adapters (syncros gave these adpapters special names like 'power flanges' or 'ring lips' or something*)












*these names are totally wrong but sounded a bit dirty so I used them rather than googling the real ones
