Swapping campag 8-speed freehub for 9-speed freehub

I have a great set of chrome wheels I want to use on my 8-speed Campag Shorter road bike. Problem is the wheels have a new 9-speed free hub. The 8-speed cassette on the 9-speed free hub will cut into the hub after a while I believe, due to being shallower teeth.

So . . . can I not simply remove the 8-speed free hub from the old wheels and stick it onto the better wheels? Essentially, are 8-speed and 9-speed campag free hubs interchangeable easily enough? That way I can leave the cassette, derailleur and free hub all as existing and have just change the actual wheels?

Also, is this easy enough or would it be a pro job?

Yes, it is possible, provided your hub is a fairly old 9 speed.

It is not too hard, but the pawls are free floating. You need to tie them in place with a cotton thread as you fit the freewheel body into the hub. Then remove the cotton. It's a fiddly job best done on the kitchen table not in the garage.
 
Depends on the axle diameter at the freehub bearings, I can help with it and I'd also be interested in your 9 SPD freehub assembly, I have an 8 SPD to swap !

Hi Thanks, but want to keep both free hub and cassette combinations, just want them on the opposite set of wheels.

Doubt you'll be able to swap them over. The only compatible combination is Chorus 8 = Veloce 9, or something like that.

I'd get some Wheels Manufacturing 9 to 8 spacers, there's some on Ebay at the moment, if I were you. You take the 9 speed cassette, remove 1 cog, and use the spacers. Works fine. I'm running 8 speed with new 10/11 record wheels.

Yes those spacers are made for this problem couple with a veloce cassette and problem solved.

Old 9 speed hubs had the same freehub body (15mm axle I think) as the later 8 speed hubs.
 
I'm not understanding some of your answers. The problem isn't fitting a cassette onto a freehub, so I don't see why I need spacer solutions. My 8 speed cassette already fits perfectly onto the 8 speed hub that it has lived with beautifully up to now, and long may it remain so. I want to take the 8 speed hub AND it's matching cassette and transfer the whole assembly onto a wheelset replacing the existing hub and cassette (9 speed). Since the hub remains with the cassette, why do I suddenly need spacers?

Was just wanting to know the feasibility of switching the whole set from one campag wheelset to another (which previously had a 9 speed hub and cassette). The internal hubs on both sets of wheels look identical, other than the differently toothed freehubs.

Because swapping campag freehub bodies is never easy :) Very few 9-10spd hubs will accept freehub body transplanted from an old 8spd hub, as campag changed the attachement, axle diameter..

so usually the ONLY solution is to get a loose cog 9spd cassette, and use 8 cogs with the conversion spacers..

As someone who has put Campag 9/10 speed freehubs onto hubs that were originally 8 speed I can't see why the OP shouldn't be able to do the reverse. My 8 speed hubs were the type that had standard diameter axles and as long as the OP's 9 speed hubs also have the same diameter axles there should be no problem.
The bearings and axles were different in that some were loose ball with a one-piece axle, others were sealed with a two-piece axle but the freehubs still swapped between the two.

As others have said the trickiest bit is getting the pawls to slip into the hub body but I was lucky enough to get the Campag tool free with my hubs BITD. I had no idea what it was at first and didn't even use it for the first few services!

To go back to the original question it should be fine but to be absolutely sure either photos of the hubs or definite model names and dates for them would be good.
