Ok guys after mucho help from the guys on here I can confirm that a set of Avid ultimates I bought as V brake levers are in fact for cantilevers.. 
....DOH!!!! 
Ideally I'd like to swap these for a nice light weight set of V brake levers, Pauls, KCNC, Avids etc,, but must must be for V's
