Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations for a freewheel that is compatible with a suntour xc pro hub.

Would be grateful for any poiunters on what model I should / could use and where I can get them from.

Many thanks
James

It depends on the actual hub.

You may need .., 7 speed, 8 speed, MicroDrive, normal, ....

You'll need to post some pictures and for a freehub measure the distance between the notches on the freehub body near the flange side to the screw on thread.

You'll probably need to source a Suntour Cassette, which type again depends on your hub type.

In that case, you're looking for any 7-speed screw-on freewheel with 5.0mm spacing, or a 6-speed block with 5.5mm spacing. A SunTour 6-speed 'Ultra' will also fit, but you'll have a load of axle sticking out on the drive side unless you re-space the rear axle. Doing this and keeping the OLN width the same will reduce your wheel dish, however, resulting in a stronger rear wheel.

You could also re-space the other way by 5mm and try an 8-speed Sachs freewheel if you can find one. However, this will result in extreme wheel dish which may compromise the strength of your rear wheel, and you'll have 8-speed cogs on the back spaced at 5.0mm. They won't index as well as they could with Shimano shifters (4.8mm cog spacing @ 8-speed) but if you're using a Shimano mech, the floating top jockey will take up some of the slack. Better to go with SunTour shifters (mixed 5.0mm and 4.8mm spacing) if you can.

Interloc Racing Design are still doing quality freewheels in 5- to 7-speed:

The word on the street is that they're apparently based on Dura-Ace tooling, and they certainly look the business.

Dr. Matt...

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/category-FREEWHEELS-75.htm (would be silver for XC Pro with code FW-AL10, but should still fit, though don't quote ;))

Find out what type your need though.
Possibly http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Sunt ... -21240.htm would work.

That SunTour freewheel is from just after the demise of the original SunTour company when they started making much lower-end parts. I used one or two of them in the mid-90s and they were fine, just not very well finished or exceptionally durable. Probably the best 13-28 screw-on block you'll get for £20
