Suntour XC Comp rear hub…

OK I give up!
How do you get the cassette off a Suntour XC Comp rear hub? When I put so much pressure on the chain whip that it started to bend, I knew something was not right.

The hub has an APII 8 speed 11 – 28 cassette (not freewheel) on it. When I got the hub it was not laced to a rim so I am using 2 chain whips. From everything have read the 2 smallest sprockets are one piece that can screw off. I’ve just sprayed it with penetrating oil to see of if it loosens things up – am I doing something wrong any other hints?

I think these are notoriously difficult to remove. Essentially the lowest two sprockets are the lockring and years of pedalling will have tightened them up something chronic! I'm sure this problem has been discussed in great depth on here before - do a search! And good luck!

The 12-tooth is the lock-ring (the 11t threads onto the 12t if I recall). my advice is to only use the chain-whip on the 12t – based on the fact that I tore the 11tooth off the 12t one time BITD.

I tend to hold the chain-whip that's on the 12-t in a vice, then grip the other one along with the wheel n' twist, thereby ensuring you don't get that dreaded moment when it all releases and you find your chin hitting the wheel.

Makes you appreciate the old HG locking ring doesn't it.
