So i'm embarking on a lightweight build project. Aiming for a sub 20lb Kestrel CSX, build thread here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=406174

I'm starting to collect bits from my stock nd elsewhere and i have a few queries regarding compatibility of Suntour XC pro and Shimano.

I have a lovely 92 XC pro groupset i wanted to use as the basis for the build, but i want to put lighter cranks on. Being a micro drive set up, do i need to take the rings from the XC pro crank and put them on whatever crank i end up using (Cook Bros maybe)?

I have a lovely pair of XC Pro hubs with the 7 speed micro drive cassette, but i have a pair or beautiful Nuke Proof Carbon wheels coming i really want to use. Can i put the cassette onto the Nuke proof hubs?

I love the XC pro thumb shifters, so neat and light, theyre 7 speed accushift ones, can i use these with Shimano derailleurs if i decide to, and can i make them 8 speed? or do i need to get 8 speed thumb shifters?

Thanks, i'm sure these are simple for someone in the know, but i am unsure.
Thanks
T

You cant use a suntour specific cassette on your nuke proof hubs. You can't even swap the freehub over I'm afraid.

Some xc pro shifters have a switch to run 7 or 8 speed. Not sure if you can run 7 speed as 8 just using friction past the last click.

Chain rings you'll be fine to use any.

Hallo again :)

Your suntour cassette won't fit the nukeproof hubs. Do the new hubs have a hyperglide or screw on cassette? either way, your best bet for a weight-weenie build is probably an 8 speed hyperdrive cassette with an alloy spider (shimano m737 or 739), assuming the new hubs will take it.

The XC pro thumbies ARE excellent, and the 8 speed version work perfectly with a shimano cassette, but you do need the 8 speed version. 7 or 8 speed versions will work perfectly with either suntour or shimano mechs prior to 10 speed shifting.
