STX RC on a budget bike....

Please forgive me if I’m wrong. I’m all for an education. But Ive never really considered Carerra bikes to be particularly good, always associating them with budget Halfords models that are ridden by people who need a bike but don’t have any interest in bikes.

So when I see an old model I tend to ignore it even more, but I’ve just come across a Carerra ‘Chrono’ that I’m very tempted to buy as it has a complete STX RC group set. Crankset, derailleurs, brakes, wheels and I’m hoping B.B. Is that normal? I know it isn’t super high end but I’ve always considered STX RC to be a very good group set that I see on a lot of retro builds. To get a complete set in VGC for cheap, might be worth splitting surely? The bike also has a crud catcher and whale tail on which will also come in handy. But didn’t know if I was missing something in the Carerra timeline where they actually sold good gear?

Carrera always had a couple of nicer machines in their range - they are unusual in that those wanting to spend that kind of money generally went with something more branded. The usual Halfords customer would not want to spend that kind of cash. But they can be rather good.

Ride it and make up your own mind.

iirc it was their top model back in the day, but as hamster said, not many sold because why wouldn't you go to a bike shop and buy a GT or Kona if you did want to spend that money

I suspect most went to the kids of rich parents who weren't that into cycling but whose parents were accustomed to buying "the best one"

Re:

Thanks people! Much appreciated. Got a kona and orange project on the go at the minute as it is so think I might just buy it and squirrel the groupset and wheels away for a nicer project in the future and then just car boot the rest in the summer..

Re:

i have split bikes just for the group set and bought one just for the front tyre,

I had bought a British eagle which had all deore lx group set on and a al carter with stc which I stripped as well, I am now running out of somethings so looking for cheapos to strip for parts

Re:

I recently bought a GT Tequesta specifically because it had a complete STX groupset in really good shape. I really wasn't interested in a low end GT frame but the groupset was too good to pass up.

Re:

Struggling to date it, but still beyond happy with it! Immaculate condition, Not sure the front is STX, looks like a cheap replacement and the adjustable stem isn’t ideal but the original has had an awful silver paint job. But whale tail, crud catcher and pretty much full STX RC in like new condition isn’t bad for £50.

4 arm cranks and v brakes puts it 98-99. I think STX-RC and STX were dropped for Deore in 1999 so probably 1998. there or there abouts anyway

Re:

Excellent thank you! My girlfriend will enjoy having a bit of a newer bike until I decide to strip it all.
