Yep, for Sheriff's star stylee you can't beat the 1st gen shimano........... and they didn't break :)

It was all down to stiffness and energy transfer. Large flange with short spokes which were tied and soldered made for a very stiff wheel. The 70's TT people also had large flange for ostensibly the same reason.

Similarly the rear end had heavier gauge tubing. My Track Falcon which was a team frame for Six day work had massive wrap round rear stays at the seat tube which hardly tapered down to the dropout.

Some riders had extra tubes brazed on the inside of the tubes in the BB area.

What they really wanted back then was a lesson in aerodynamics LOL
