Stolen Car :(

Fairly sure my car's been robbed from my street - absolutely gutted  I've still got a tiny bit of hope as this happened once before, years ago and it turns out the council moved it for gutter cleaning but when that happended the police told me straight away when I reported it - they didn't think that was the case this time.

Just been on the phone to the insurance company - anyone had any experience of claiming for a stolen motor? My default expectation of insurance companies is that they'll try and wriggle out of paying any way they can - am I being over pessimistic?

I'm a bit worried that the value on the insurance certificate is listed as "market value" - I bet their opinion and mine don't match! Plus it was/is a 4x4 which I got for a good price at the end of last winter - to replace like for like now would cost more. It was an old car so we're only talking a value of a couple of grand here, meaning with paying off the rest of the premium. plus a £550 excess, I'm thinking I'll be lucky to see enough cash to get me an old banger.

The anger is beginning to subside and now I'm just plain old gutted. Seriously shit timing as well - skint just now and I'm starting a new job in a few weeks and for the first time in years will actually need a car to commute a couple of 120 mile round trips every week :(

That really is crap. I hope it sorts itself out in your favour.
I have no idea withinsurenace, sorry i cant help.
But may be worth going over the t+c's of your insurance contract to see what you make of it?

It sure is crap - going to have an impact on my bikes as well. Not only can I not ride as much with no car, but if things don't sort themselves out quickly (or at all) I might have to do some selling to get funds together for a new car. It's bloody ruined my weekend!

Did have a look through the insurance docs but they're not really much help. Guy I reported to sounded like your general call-centre type - just going through a form and not really interested. Said the main claims team would be in touch within a few days.

Dont accept their first offer and gather as much evidence of the car's actual market value as you can.

Your insurance will go up too (unless your next car is very cheap to insure)

Yeah, I was thinking of classified ads for the same model, and completed listings on ebay etc.

Not sure about the insurance going up, although that's one of my major concerns. I've got 9 years' NCB, which is protected on this policy. I think that means I can have 2 claims in 3 years (or something along those lines) without it affecting my premiums?

+1!
My old fella had an accident last Christmas. Saga Insurance's first offer for his written off car was £2500. After a bit of haggling I got it up to £4500.
Shysters, trying to rip off old folk like that...

Does glass's etc keep up with the fluctuation due to time of year though? Ive been looking at small 4x4's and all are some way above glass's and still selling.

Your best printing out as many autotrader ads as you can find

Just googled for reviews of my insurance company (underwriters), Sabre - ouch! Wish I hadn't done that, it doesn't make for encouraging reading...
