On my Orange Elite, with a 1 1/4" fork, I'm considering a 1 1/8" Syncros stem http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0190836435 with a shim.

Has anyone overcome this problem before?

SJS seem to do shims http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Thorn-Alloy-shim-to-fit-1inch-(22.2mm-insert)-quill-stem-to-1-1-8inch-or-1-1-4inch-threaded-forks-444.htm but they say it's not suitable for matching 1 1/4" forks to a 1 1/8" stem. Surely just opening up the shim a bit would make it all work? The shim thickness would be right (1/16"), just the shim itself would need to be stretched?

Weird tho as they say it's suitable to match a 1" stem to both 1 1/8" and 1 1/4" forks - but I can't see how it can be suitable for both, as surely the shim isn't thick enough to do the 1 1/4"???

Way ago I were looing for ways to reduce a 1/4 ahead stem to fit a 1/8 steerer. Never succeeded.

In your case: Maybe buy some cheap seatpost shims an try to improvise something?

I still can't see why the shim from SJS won't work - am I missing something???

The shim converts 1" tubes to 1 1/8", so the shim wall must be 1/16" thick.

With opening the shim up a bit, i.e. stretching it around a 1 1/8" stem, that brings the stem up to 1 1/4".

DONE!

Shoot me down?!!??

a 11/8 quill stem in a 1 1/4" steerer tube? requires a shim with 25.4mm ID and 28.6mm OD which are those shims that come with many 1 1/8 ahead stems to fit them on 1" steerer tubes. plenty of those around for cheap. scant had tons of them i think. you will need two of them as they are a bit short. i did that with a controltech stem on a manitou. worked well but in general shims are not ideal if you can get proper sized stems or seat posts.

alternatively you can use a seat post shim in those dimensions which are longer.
