Steerer tube length

raleighmontage

Devout Dirtbag
The montage needs new forks - the threading is destroyed on the old ones.
I've measured my steerer tube to be 1" and 130mm long. However I've found a lot of 145mm forks, and no 130mm ones.
Am i doing my measurements wrong?

Any guidance gratefully accepted!
Cheers

It depends on the length of your head tube, and also the stack height of your headset. As an example to give you a rule of thumb, I have a fork here that fitted perfectly on a 11cm head tube and the steerer is 142mm. So if your head tube is 10cm, the steerer length sounds logical.

If all you can get is 14.5cm steerers, is there not enough thread on them to cut off 1.5cm and still have sufficient thread left?

It might be possible to get the LBS to cut and thread the steerer of the replacement forks for you. I'd check that they can do it before you buy 'em though.

My head tube is 11cm. The steerer tube - i think- measures 140/142mm.
So I will get looking for that size fork....
I can get it modified by an engineering company that my mum works for if there's a problem.

What does LBS mean?

Most cycle shops I've come across are only too happy to re-thread a fork as it gives them a chance to make some money from tools that haven't been used in years (because of the adoption of ahead sets)

I got SJS to add another 2" of thread to my manitous.

They did say it's dependent on the threads being cut rather than rolled though, but added that the vast majority are cut anyway.
