Just picked up an old Chas Roberts white spider frame. Was well chuffed initially but upon lifting the frame up, you can here all kinds of nasty flaked off rust moving inside the tubes. Upon closer inspection, there are some small holes in the tube around the lower bottle bosses :(

I take it the frame is fooked and only good as an ornament ?? Shame really cause it looks ace and is perfectly sized for me...

I'd try phoning Chas and ask him how much to put in a new downtube and a respray.

I've had another framebuilder rebuild a bike (crash damage) before, and the cost isn't so bad.

MERCIAN in derby will be fitting a new seat tube in my yo eddy after the new year,i`ve had it back for the cannock ride (dec 30th), there charging £80 + vat so a down tube should not be to much more.

To avoid this problem in the future slap a little waxoyl into the frame. You can get into most tubes through BB shell and bottle mountings etc. Get it nice and warm first and put it in and move it around. The weight weenies can use WD40 but this has to be done every few months.

Isn't waxoyl the nasty black stuff they use on the bottom of cars? There must be a better alternative?

No thats underseal- dreadfull stuff. Waxoyl is a different kettle of fish altogether. Waxoyl is used on cars but is not as horrid as that bitumin based crap and it really works- I put it my frames and its kept them minty rust free!

Because one tube has gone through, will that not mean the rest are gonna be close behind ?? On old cars, once you get some rot somewhere, you're usually chasing rust all round it...
