What are the options for rear mech shifters (9 or 10 speed compatible) that aren't part of a combo gear/brake setup?

Thumbies would be ideal but can any cope with 9-speed?

I quite like the shifter pods on the Eldridge Grade.. they're LX (but combined, and 7-speed :( ) and the window is very slim/subtle on top of the bars..

hmm not sure about nine speed
9 speed isnt so retro right? so probably quite hard to find
x9 has the gear indicator wrapped around the bar, most now have them neat near the bar eg. deore and the like

Just have a look on CRC, there are loads of 9spd shifter pods, a lot of the shimano ones you can remove the indicator windows if you wish.

9 speed thumbies are possible, but it involves buying Pauls thumbie mounts (or similar) and a decent set of 9spd bar end shifters to mount on them. Which usually equates to a minimum of £80.

No, not retro at all but new stuff look s 'blocky' that I've seen so somewhere in the middle would be cool..

I will only need 1, the r/h one.. Pauls mounts with thumbie sounds interesting..

Not thinking of a 'cash no object' type build but since the plan is to gather parts over a long-ish term, I'm hoping to be able to buy mostly high-ish end stuff...

I have run standard 7 speed Deore thumbies on a 9 speed set-up in friction mode without any problems so you don't need to go the Paul route unless you want to.

I needed a 9-speed shifter very recently. The only ones sold individually are XTR and Deore. The guy at Leisure Lakes has a Saint one he had left. Sold it me at a discounted £30 and saved my afternoon!
