It measure the power you are outputting at the crank. Apparently it is useful for training, because it is more objective than how hard you feel you are working.

Simple method of measuring output:

Before I ride I eat a burger, I ride and get knackered and hungry, my power output is therefore 1 burger. I am currently working on having the burger adopted as the SI unit of power rather than the Watt.....
