I was the 'mechanic' amongst my bunch of riding mates. Whenever I stripped a particular mates bike down we always put the bits in his parents dishwasher. They're still unaware afaik. We also wrecked the same mates parents video camera...

ZOMG! I'm single and I won't do that! ........I do have a parts washer in the garage, though.

Then again, I was exposed to my first dishwasher when I bought my current house. It was a good 4 years before I bothered to try it out. I had no idea there was special detergent for them, and what the results of squirting in a few seconds worth of washing up liquid instead would be. Our secretary at work was in tears when I recounted the story to her the next morning.
